Programme Objective
The general objective of the MEM Programme is to qualify young professionals for a career in the area of environmental management. The programme aims at producing graduates with capability to constructively engage in complex environmental concerns that confront contemporary societies. The programme is open to graduates from a wide range of background and experience. It caters for both mid-career professionals wishing to gain a postgraduate qualification, upgrade and extend skills and knowledge, or move into the environmental field and suitably qualified graduates from cognitive fields.

Programme Duration
Students will be enrolled to a full time programme whose duration is 18 months as per Mzumbe University Regulations and Guidelines for Postgraduate Programmes, 2009 (Section 3.3.8). During the first academic year, the first and second semesters 18 weeks each will be for intensive coursework. During the second academic year each student will carry out an independent research on an approval environment oriented topic of his/her choice after which he/she will submit a dissertation to be examined as per MU examination regulations.

General Admission Requirements
For applicants to qualify for Master of Environmental Management) degree programme, they should generally posses a minimum of:-
A Bachelor’s Degree of at least Second Class from Mzumbe University or from other recognized institution of higher learning.
Or
A Second Class Advanced Diploma or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution of higher Learning obtained in at least three (3) years of study.
Or
A Pass Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma which must be supported by evidence of additional examined Postgraduate Diploma or professional qualification.
Or
At least an Average Credit of ‘B’ or above for candidates who hold unclassified Degrees.


Specific Requirements
In addition to the general academic requirements stated above, applicants’ qualifications should focus on environmental management, environmental planning, environment and development, natural resource management or environmental studies and related disciplines. The qualifications should be environment related social science degree or advance diplomas.

Applicants not possessing the above specific requirements including those with environment related natural science background such as agriculture, forestry and related fields may be accepted after scrutinising their credentials and assessing their suitability taking into consideration such as aspects as working experience in the field of environmental planning and management or at policy influencing positions. Such applicants may be required to submit some additional information about their suitability to support their applications.

Course Evaluation

In order to be awarded the MEM, students must pass in their coursework consisting of term papers, written assignments and tests; university examination at the end of each semester and thesis with oral component where the candidate must score at least 50% in the dissertation for both written and oral examinations. At the end of the programme successful candidates will be awarded a Master of Science Degree in Environmental Management of Mzumbe University.
